Fue la tercera película de la serie a realizar y el sexto y último en la cronología de Star Wars. Contó en el reparto con Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels James y Earl Jones

La película El regreso del jedi fue estrenada el 25 de mayo de 1983, y fue lanzado en VHS y LaserDisc varias veces en las décadas de los 80 y 90 años. La película fue relanzada con algunas modificaciones en el año 1997 como parte de una edición especial de las tres películas de la trilogía original, y esta versión fue lanzada más adelante en VHS y Laserdisc. Otra edición especial fue lanzada en DVD en 2004, pero con algunos cambios con referencia a la edición del film en 1997. La versión original y sin alteraciones de la película fue re-lanzado como parte de un nuevo DVD en septiembre de 2006.

Teniendo un claro objetivo Luke Skywalker, trata de acabar con el imperio y a su ya conocido padre Darth Vader. La película se desarrolla en 4 DBY, un año después de la ocupación imperial de la Ciudad de las Nube, cuando Luke y sus amigos viajan a Tatooine para rescatar a Han Solo, de las garras de Jabba el Hutt. El Imperio se prepara para destruir la Alianza Rebelde con una estrella de los más poderosos de la muerte, mientras que la flota rebelde ataca. Luke Skywalker se enfrenta a su padre Darth Vader en un duelo final, bajo la mirada del Emperador Palpatine. Luke se Mantenía vivo porque tenía un objetivo claro, no como el resto de la humanidad. En cuanto dejas de tener objetivos y metas, te atrapa el lado oscuro.
